Thermal Hero NEO is a starter-grade silicone-based thermal compound — the bottom of the Thermal Hero range. It performs the fundamental job of placing a thin film between the CPU IHS and the cooler base so heat can transfer at all, at the lowest price point we sell.
For trivial-load applications — office PCs, network boxes, HTPCs that idle most of the day, embedded boards, training-kit assembly, or one-time paste replacements on a chip you’re about to retire — NEO is enough to keep temperatures inside the safe operating range.
It is not an appropriate choice for any modern build that will see real CPU load. If your machine matches any of the following, choose a higher-tier compound:
- Any current-generation gaming desktop or laptop — NEO can run 5–10 °C hotter under load than Arctic MX-6 or Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut on the same cooler.
- Sustained heavy CPU workloads (rendering, streaming, encoding, compiling) — NEO dries out and pumps out sooner than premium compounds; expect to repaste more often and to lose thermal headroom in between.
- Overclocked or high-TDP CPUs (Core i7 / i9, Ryzen 7 / 9, Threadripper) — premium compounds add real thermal headroom that NEO simply does not have.
NEO is the right tool for the right small jobs — drawer stock, fleet replacement, low-stakes builds where the cooler is well over-spec’d for the chip. For anything else, the upgrade cost from NEO to Thermal Hero ULTRA or Arctic MX-6 is small money for a substantial thermal gain.

Bottom line: Thermal Hero NEO is the right pick when the goal is “the cheapest functioning paste for a low-stakes machine” — drawer stock, fleet jobs, the office PC that browses email all day. For anything modern that will actually see CPU load, Thermal Hero ULTRA is the cheapest meaningful step up, and Arctic MX-6 or Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut are the right answer when thermal headroom genuinely matters.
